New Zealand endured a 28-year absence from the FIFA World Cup™ before reaching South Africa 2010 with a drama-charged intercontinental victory over Bahrain. The 1-0 aggregate scoreline may have been on a knife-edge throughout but even that could not compare with the All Whites' adventures in reaching Spain 1982. The Kiwis played a then-record 15 matches to qualify, including a remarkable 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia in Riyadh when anything less would have resulted in elimination. There followed a character-filled 2-1 play-off win over China PR in neutral Singapore, to deny the world’s most populous nation their first appearance on the world stage.

FIFA World Cup finals history
New Zealand were dealt the toughest draw imaginable for their FIFA World Cup debut. The Kiwis were forced to open against a Scotland side featuring some of their all-time greats, before meeting USSR and rounding out their campaign against a vintage Brazil, and the likes of Zico and Eder. It was little surprise that the amateur New Zealanders were unable to secure a point but they took solace from two goals in a 5-2 defeat against Scotland. Incredibly the All Whites completed South Africa 2010 as the only unbeaten team, although draws against world champions Italy, Paraguay and Slovakia, meant elimination at the group stage.

The current crop
The All Whites have had limited opportunities to test their new found self-assurance on the international stage since South Africa 2010. An inability to find the net has been a recurring theme in the few matches they have played, despite coach Ricki Herbert often starting with three forwards. While age is likely to prevent some of the key personnel from South Africa 2010 featuring at Brazil 2014, a host of new faces is likely to see the All Whites enjoying greater depth than has previously been the case.

The key players
Captain Ryan Nelsen is the team’s leader in every sense and his performances in the heart of defence are constantly of a high standard. The only question mark is the advancing years of a body which has suffered numerous injuries. Striker Shane Smeltz has a prolific goalscoring record at club level and, with the ability to score a wide variety of goals, is a classic No9. New Zealand are well stocked in the goalkeeping department, highlighted by Mark Paston, who demonstrated his qualities under pressure both in South Africa and in the qualifiers.

Montenegro are one of FIFA’s newest members, having joined in 2007 following their severing of ties with Serbia, and have therefore only taken part in one qualifying phase – for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ – so far in their short existence. While their maiden campaign did not exactly make headlines around Europe, the Montenegrins certainly did not look out of place. Although they only managed one victory, finishing fifth in a six-team group, signs of future solidity were to be found in the draws they secured, notably twice against Republic of Ireland, who went on to face France in the play-off round.

Like the powerful Yugoslavia teams that came before them, Montenegro are a very fit, compact, hard-working side, and are highly disciplined at the back. Many of the team’s key players ply their trade in the Russian league. Currently involved in just their second-ever UEFA EURO qualifying campaign, the Balkan nation has surprised many onlookers by consistently vying with England for top spot in the group. Their remarkable progress is a result of the country’s football authorities investing in the development of the game, as well as of the team acquiring greater international experience.

Forward and captain Mirko Vucinic, who had the honour of scoring the first goal in Montenegro’s history – a penalty against Hungary – is one of the team’s most high-profile players.

Traditionally, England have made hard work of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup but that was not the case in their most recent attempt. A 4-1 victory over Croatia in Zagreb set the side on their way to comfortable qualification for South Africa, winning nine of their ten fixtures. They left it far later in qualifying for Korea/Japan 2002, needing a 5-1 triumph over Germany in Munich and a last-minute David Beckham free-kick against Greece to reach the finals. England have failed to qualify on three occasions – 1974, 1978 and 1994 – with the former being famous in England for the failure to overcome Poland at Wembley.

FIFA World Cup finals history
England have appeared at 13 editions of the FIFA World Cup, including seven of the last eight. They were below-par at South Africa in 2010, narrowly qualifying from their group with a victory in the final match against Slovenia, before being outclassed 4-1 by Joachim Low’s Germany at the Round of 16 stage. The Three Lions have been FIFA World Cup winners once, in 1966 when they were hosts, but have since suffered a succession of early exits. Sir Bobby Robson came closest to matching the achievements of Sir Alf Ramsey’s ‘Wingless Wonders’, guiding England to the semi-finals at Italy 1990 only to be knocked out on penalties by Germany.

England have been focusing on youth. In midfield, Armando Cooper brings fresh talent to the squad. Contrasting Cooper's lively youth and inexperience is veteran striker Luis Tejada, who is best known for scoring an equaliser against Mexico in the final round of 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying and playing a crucial role in the famous win over USA in 2011's Gold Cup.

Honduras Details:
Upon making their first FIFA World Cup return in nearly three decades, Honduras were faced with tough group adversaries in South Africa, including eventual World Champions Spain. The Hondurans opened the tournament with a 1-0 loss to Chile, and soon became the ill-fated team to first encounter the wrath of tournament top-scorer David Villa, who grabbed both goals in Spain’s 2-0 win. In their only other FIFA World Cup appearance, Jose de La Paz held the coaching reins and steered Honduras to a surprising opening 1-1 draw with Spain, the 1982 tournament’s hosts, and followed up that account with the same scoreline against Northern Ireland. Their campaign was cut short, however, at the group stage after Yugoslavia beat Los Catrachos 1-0 thanks to a late goal.

The current crop
After Honduras’s South Africa exit, a rollercoaster in terms of coaching changes and veteran departures impacted the squad. Long-time stalwarts Amado Guevara and Danny Turcios announced their international retirements, and despite ending their World Cup qualification drought, Rueda resigned from his post as manager after last year’s finals. The team has since gone through two coaching changes until settling on Luis Fernando Suarez, who took to the helm in February 2011 and led the team to their first Central American championship since 1995 and an admirable semi-final run at the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, which was eventually ended by Champions-to-be Mexico.

The key players
Left-back Emilio Izaguirre was the find of the 2010/11 season for Celtic - named Scottish Premier League Player of the Year - and is a key force within Honduras's respectable backline. He is helped by captain and goalkeeper Noel Valladares who, despite a shy off-the-field personality, played an instrumental role in Honduras's qualification for South Africa 2010 and their deep run at the latest instalment of the Gold Cup. Wilson Palacios, one of the more recognisable faces of Honduran football playing for Tottenham Hotspur, is also a crucial piece of the Honduran puzzle and is expected to be fit and available for Brazil 2014 qualification.
