Four years later the Americans went out in the first round, but they caused a grand sensation in Brazil in 1950 when, led by outstanding goalkeeper Frank Borghi, they managed to beat mighty England in Belo Horizante in an upsets for the ages. Another first-round exit came in 1990, but as hosts in 1994 they managed to reach the knockout rounds, a result that paved the way to more consistency. And after a last-place finish at France 1998, they beat Portugal and Mexico in Korea/Japan 2002 and only just missed out on a semi-final place after losing to Germany. Usually lining up in a 4-4-2 formation, with two holding midfielders, the Americans are a difficult side to break down, and dangerous on the break. They used the counter-attack to stunning effect in South Africa in 2009 when they beat Spain to reach the Final of the FIFA Confederations Cup. They repeated that final run at the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup despite suffering a humiliating defeat to Panama in the first round. In the end, they were humbled for the second straight time in the grand finale of the regional showpiece, surrendering a 2-0 lead to lose out 4-2 to Mexico on home soil.

In recent years, the name Landon Donovan has been synonymous with the US national team. The Los Angeles Galaxy attacker has often saved his very best performances for a USA shirt, and there is little doubt that Donovan will once again be one of his team’s leading men as they set their sights on Brazil 2014. The Central Americans received a bye into the second stage of qualifying in the CONCACAF zone and there they took an early departure from the tournament at the hands of a resurgent El Salvador squad. Panama had beaten the Salvadorans in the first leg by a narrow 1-0 margin, but lost 3-1 in the second at the Estadio Cuscatlan. As a result, coach Alexandre Guimaraes was promptly given his marching orders by a country stunned at the loss.
