Qualification history
Argentina have reached the FIFA World Cup™ finals on 15 occasions, and few would bet against them making it 16 this time, especially with 2014 hosts Brazil absent from the qualifying competition. Present at the last ten world finals, La Albiceleste have had little problem in progressing to the big stage since the ten-team round-robin group system was introduced. Their only real hiccup came in the South Africa 2010 qualifying campaign, when they flirted with disaster before edging past Peru and Uruguay in their final two games.

Argentina have contested four FIFA World Cup Finals in all, the first of them at the inaugural tournament, Uruguay 1930, when they went down 4-2 to the host nation. Respective contributions from Mario Kempes and Diego Maradona inspired them to the biggest prize in football on home soil in 1978 and again at Mexico 1986, while their last showpiece appearance came at Italy 1990, when they were denied by an Andreas Brehme penalty. Since then they have been unable to progress beyond the quarter-finals.
The current crop
Argentina rang the changes after making their second consecutive last-eight exit to Germany at South Africa 2010, with Sergio Batista taking over from Maradona as coach. Significant friendly wins over Spain, Brazil and Portugal then followed, but after going out as hosts in the quarter-finals of the Copa America 2011, the coach lost his job with Alejandro Sabella named as his successor.
The key players
With the landmark achievement of claiming four consecutive FIFA Ballon d'Ors (2009-2012), Lionel Messi in the undisputed leader of the Argentina national team and a multiple-trophy winner with Barcelona. Breaking all kind of goal-records, La Pulga is now looking to achieve greatness with his country after failing, somewhat surprisingly, to find the back of the net at South Africa 2010. Qualification history
As far as their South American rivals were once concerned, a game against Venezuela was a virtual guarantee of three easy points, La Vinotinto only scoring their first FIFA World Cup™ qualifier victory in the preliminaries for Spain 1982. That is no longer the case, however, and after finishing above Bolivia in the Germany 2006 competition, the Venezuelans then fared better than both the latter and Peru in the South Africa 2010 qualifying table. Their dream now is to push on and end their unwanted record of being the only South American team never to have reached the world finals.
The current crop
The clearest indication of the development of Venezuelan football, before the recent fourth-place finish at the 2011 Copa America, came with qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup Egypt 2009 and a subsequent place in the last 16 of the competition. The youthful Cesar Farias, coach of that promising side, has been in charge of the full Vinotinto team since the start of 2008, and has a strong mix of seasoned performers and young talents at his disposal. They proved to be well on the right track after surprising the watching world in the continental Copa America showpiece in Argentina in 2011.
The key players
The pick of the youngsters who excelled at Egypt 2009 are Yohandry Orozco and Salomon Rondon, both of whom are now playing in Europe. Sharing star billing with them are experienced hands Juan Arango, Giancarlo Maldonado and Jose Manuel Rey.
