Luxembourg Details:

Qualification history
Luxembourg are undoubtedly one of the biggest minnows on the European scene, despite having contested every FIFA World Cup™ qualifying campaign since 1934. A place in the final tournament remains a distant dream for the Grand Duchy, although their South Africa 2010 bid offered real signs of improvement.

The current crop
The clearest evidence of progress came in their 2-1 victory away against Switzerland in September 2008, a result that suggested Luxembourg can compete with some of the continent’s leading lights in a one-off encounter. Add in the encouraging performances of their U-21 side and Luxembourg will be desperate to build on the promise of that South Africa 2010 campaign, when they avoided last place in their group for the first time since 1934.

The key players
Part of the team which contested the 2006 UEFA European U-17 Championship on home soil, young midfielder Lars Gerson represents Luxembourg’s future, while Rene Peters and Eric Hoffmann remain crucial figures in the present.

Coach: Luc Holtz
Best performance in a FIFA competition: None
Former stars: Francois Konter, Carlo Weis, Roby Langers

Azerbaijan Details:
Qualification history
Azerbaijan have never reached a FIFA World Cup™ finals and finished bottom of their qualifying groups for the 2002 and 2006 editions. Slight progress was nonetheless made ahead of South Africa 2010 as they beat Liechtenstein 2-0 to finish above their fellow minnows.

The current crop
Still a young nation, Azerbaijan are yet to find their feet on the international stage, but they have added consistency and solidity to their game since the 2008 appointment of Berti Vogts, the experienced coach boasting UEFA EURO 1996 glory with his native Germany on his CV. No strangers to stout defensive performances and able to frustrate sides both home and away, Azerbaijan now hope to develop more of an attacking threat – an area they will need to improve quickly on the road to Brazil 2014.

The key players
A national team stalwart since 2001, captain and defender Rashad Sadygov has experience of the Turkish league, and it was he who scored the historic goal that gave Azerbaijan victory against Turkey in EURO 2012 qualifying.

Coach: Berti Vogts
Best performance in a FIFA competition: None
Former stars: Aslan Kerimov, Gurban Gurbanov
