Mozambique Details:

Qualification history
In Group B of the third phase of African Zone qualifying, Mozambique fell just five points short of qualifying for South Africa 2010 and a historic first FIFA World Cup™ finals berth. Finishing in third spot with seven points, behind only Nigeria (12) and Tunisia (11), the Mozambicans underlined their competitiveness by sinking the latter 1-0 at home in their final match – a result that ensured the Super Eagles reached South Africa. In the second phase, they had come second in Group 7 on eight points, four behind Côte d’Ivoire.

The current crop
Mozambique are hopeful of making the jump in quality needed to join Africa’s traditional heavyweights. Though in South Africa 2010 qualifying it was the likes of Cameroon and Ghana that dominated, Angola and Togo’s success in reaching Germany 2006 proves that the mission is not impossible.

The key players
Dario Monteiro is Os Mambas’ most-capped player, while the foreign-based quartet of attacker Domingues, defenders Mexer and Paito and midfielder Simao are all integral members of the side.

Coach: Gert Engels
Best performance in a FIFA competition: None
Former stars: Armando Sa, Chiquinho Conde, Jojo, Tico-Tico

Guinea Details:
Qualification history
Guinea have long held out hopes of gracing a FIFA World Cup™ final tournament. Disqualified for political reasons while seemingly on course for Korea/Japan 2002, they have failed to come as close to realising their dream since then.

The current crop
The Syli National fully deserve their reputation as a team to treat with caution on the African scene. CAF Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finalists on three consecutive occasions ahead of their under-par 2010 bid, the side quickly put the disappointment of that latter tournament behind them. After making a strong start in 2013 CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, they just missed out after losing against Niger. However, they will be anxious to maintain their momentum down the road to the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil.

The key players
A figurehead in his midfield berth, Kevin Constant personifies the new Guinea and can count on able support from the likes of Kamil Zayatte and Pascal Feindouno. All have carved out careers in Europe, while Feindouno, the country’s all-time record scorer, still has much to give at this level.

Coach: Michel Dussuyer
Best performance in a FIFA competition: FIFA U-17 World Cup China PR 1985 (Fourth place)
Former stars: Aboubacar Sidiki ‘Titi’ Camara, Pablo Thiam
