Lesotho Details:
Qualification history
Lesotho have an inconsistent history trying to qualify for the FIFA World Cup™. Affiliated with FIFA since 1964, they did not attempt to make the tournament until 1974. Eight years later, the Crocodiles were unsuccessful again, and it wasn't until Korea Republic/Japan 2002 that they again entered the preliminaries in earnest. South Africa proved to be much too strong in that case, while four years later Botswana also had their number. Four years ago, Lesotho started off their first qualifying group phase with an encouraging 3-2 loss to Ghana. Unfortunately, they did not score again and lost the rest of their six matches.

The current crop
Recent success by Lesotho’s U-20 team in reaching the continental finals, something the senior side has failed to do, is a positive sign. The nucleus of that team will be expected to contribute, especially as they missed out on the chance to gain experience in qualifying for the 2012 CAF Africa Cup of Nations.

The key players
South Africa-based captain and linchpin Lehlohonolo Seema can bring solidity to the Lesotho defence if he stays fit, while Bokang Mothoana is a promising midfielder.

Qualification history
As one of Africa’s most consistent sides over the last three decades, Zambia must feel that the time is right for them to finally reach the FIFA World Cup™. Zambia were a point away from USA 94, and it was during that campaign that an airplane tragedy killed most of the national team. Since then, they have always been in the mix without ever getting to the brink of the finals. In 2006, they impressed in the midst of a two-horse race, finishing four points off of Togo’s pace and two behind Senegal. Four years ago, the Copper Bullets came back from a slow start to top their opening group ahead of the Togolese. In the final round, they ended up eight points behind Egypt and Algeria, who famously ended up even atop the table.

The current crop
With a strong batch of players under the age of 30, Zambia have been patiently building their team through 2012 CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Full of speed, power and growing in experience, they always promise to be a handful.

The key players
Joseph Musonda is an experienced defender, while Isaac Chansa and Rainford Kalaba control midfield. The attacking force made up of Chris Katongo, Given Singuluma and Collins Mbesuma is sure to cause headaches.

Coach: Herve Renard
Best performance in a FIFA competition: None
Former stars: Kalusha Bwalya, Dickson Makwaza
