Ecuador Details:
Qualification history
After successfully negotiating their previous two qualifying campaigns, Ecuador missed out on participating at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, finishing in sixth position in the regional league table, just one point behind Uruguay, who would eventually make it to the tournament via a play-off with Costa Rica. La Tri’s best performance to date in qualifying came during their attempts to take part in Korea/Japan 2002, when they finished second behind Argentina. Four years later, they were celebrating a final position of third, once again synonymous with qualification. The Ecuadorians’ worst performance under the current system was the seventh spot they recorded ahead of France 1998.

FIFA World Cup finals history
While Ecuador failed to extricate themselves from a tough group at Korea/Japan 2002, their first-ever appearance at the final stages of a FIFA World Cup, the story was quite different at Germany 2006, where the South Americans got as far as the last 16, having surprisingly finished second in their pool behind the host nation. Unfortunately for the CONMEBOL representatives, England would prove a hurdle too far; the Three Lions triumphed 1-0 to move on to the quarter-finals.

The current crop
Reinaldo Rueda took charge of Ecuador in August 2010, just a month after guiding Honduras to South Africa 2010. His objective is clear: to follow in the footsteps of the two Colombian compatriots that preceded him in the job, Hernan Dario Gomez and Luis Suarez, and take Ecuador to Brazil 2014. Boasting a stable squad that has gone through a natural process of renewal, the Ecuadorians are likely to be a major candidate for one of South America’s qualifying slots. Despite these high expectations, they endured a poor Copa America 2011 campaign, not registering a single win and departing after the group stage.

The key players
Wingers Antonio Valencia and Christian Noboa, as well as forwards Christian Benitez and Felipe Caicedo, represent an exciting new wave for Ecuadorian football, but they are also ably assisted by a handful of evergreen stalwarts with European experience, such as Edison Mendez, Walter Ayovi and Segundo Castillo.

Coach: Reinaldo Rueda
Best performance in a FIFA competition: FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 (Round of 16)
Former stars: Ulises de la Cruz, Agustin Delgado, Jose Francisco Cevallos

Paraguay Details:
Qualification history
La Albirroja have successfully negotiated FIFA World Cup™ qualifying phases on seven occasions, not including the first-ever edition at Uruguay 1930, when they were invited to attend. Their most impressive campaign was their most recent, when Paraguay picked up ten wins from their 18 encounters (a record for Los Guaraníes) on the road to South Africa 2010. Having led the standings for large chunks of the South American Zone qualifiers, they ended up a highly respectable third.

FIFA World Cup finals history
Boasting a total of eight appearances at the FIFA World Cup final tournaments, four of these have come in consecutive fashion spanning the 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010 editions. Characterised over recent years by tactical solidity, aerial prowess and a consistent supply of top talent, at South Africa 2010 Paraguay continued their upward progression by following up their record qualifying statistics with a best-ever finals performance. Indeed, La Albirroja went all the way to the quarter-finals, where they exited 1-0 to eventual champions Spain after a dramatic second half featuring a missed penalty apiece. The Paraguayans also reached the Round of 16 in 1986, 1998 and 2002, with the ’98 campaign particularly memorable for their iconic backline and epic nature of their extra-time defeat to hosts and eventual winners France.

The current crop
Having kept the core of the squad that reached the last eight on South African soil together, Paraguay will be hoping to keep moving onwards and upwards – introducing new talents over the next three years and continuing to push South American powerhouses Argentina and Brazil all the way. Hugely confident when playing at their fortress-like Estadio Defensores del Chaco, their steely rearguard and abundance of quality attackers also make them a dangerous proposition away from home. La Albirroja proved all these qualities once again by finishing runners-up at the 2011 Copa America in Argentina. After earning five draws and no victories at the Copa America, Gerardo Martino decided to leave his post as head coach and was replaced by Francisco Chiqui Arce, who was a member of Paraguay's 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cup squads, only for Arce himself to be replaced in June 2012 by Uruguayan Gerardo Pelusso.

The key players
In striker Oscar Cardozo, Paraguay have a player who has been a regular contender for the European Golden Shoe since joining Benfica in 2007, while Los Guaraníes can also call on a host of other established goal-getters in the shape of Nelson Valdez and Roque Santa Cruz. Versatile, tireless and consistent, Cristian Riveros can supply goals and creative impetus from any midfield position, while the international profile of defender Antolin Alcaraz and Paulo Da Silva have continued to grow since their impressive displays in South Africa.

Coach: Gerardo Pelusso
Best performances in a FIFA competition: FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 (Quarter-finals), Men’s Olympic Football Tournament Athens 2004 (Runners-up), FIFA U-20 World Cup Argentina 2001 (Fourth place)
Former stars: Roberto Acuna, Francisco Arce, Jose Luis Chilavert
