Congo Details:

Qualification history
Testing themselves at a FIFA World Cup™ finals remains the dream for Congo, who failed to make the grade even during the golden era in which they were crowned African champions in 1972. They came closest to joining the global elite ahead of France 1998, when they were pipped by South Africa following a 1-0 loss to their rivals in their last outing.

The current crop
The heady days of the 1970s belong to the distant past, but the Red Devils have a number of up-and-coming talents, not least from the side which reached the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup finals. Given that several stalwarts also possess experience in Europe's leading leagues, Congo will demand serious respect on the road to Brazil 2014.

The key players
Midfield pair Delvin Ndinga and Oscar Ewolo have both honed their skills in France for several years, while defender Christopher Samba knows all about top-level football from successful stints in Germany and England.

Coach: Kamel Djabour
Best performance in a FIFA competition: FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 (Round of 16)
Former stars: Paul Moukila, Jean-Michel Mbono, Germain Ndzabana

Gabon Details:

Qualification history
Gabon’s finest hour in FIFA World Cup™ qualifying came in their maiden campaign, when they overcame Nigeria to deny their more prestigious rivals a place at Italy 1990. Eliminated in the first round ahead of Korea/Japan 2002 and after the group stage four years later, the Panthers finally made headlines again on the road to South Africa 2010. Placed in a tough group alongside Togo, Cameroon and Morocco, they kicked off with a victory in Casablanca and a home success against the Sparrowhawks to take an early lead in the section, only to have their qualification hopes dashed in their two meetings with the Indomitable Lions.

The current crop
2012 CAF Africa Cup of Nations co-hosts along with Equatorial Guinea, Gabon is capable of the best and the worst. In 2012, they won all their group matches, but lost in quarter-final against Mali. They were unable to qualify for the 2013 edition in South Africa, however. The Panthers are anxious to finally step up to a new level, building on the experience amassed under former coach Alain Giresse and present incumbent Gernot Rohr.

The key players
Now in his 30s, Daniel Cousin remains the side’s attacking fulcrum, backed up by the talent of Pierre-Emerik Aubameyang and midfielder Eric Mouloungui.

Coach: Gernot Rohr
Best performance in a FIFA competition: None
Former stars: Francois Amegasse, Pierre Aubameyang
