Burkina Faso Details:
Qualification history
Burkina Faso have pitted themselves against their continental rivals in six previous FIFA World Cup™ qualifying campaigns without ever reaching the finals. Their South Africa 2010 bid was their most successful, the Stallions topping their second-round group ahead of Tunisia and beating Guinea and Malawi home and away in the following stage, only to be pipped by Côte d’Ivoire following a pair of losses to the Elephants.

The current crop
Since Burkina Faso (which can be translated as "the home of men of integrity") began emphasising the importance of developing young players, results have improved dramatically. Burkina Faso have excelled in youth tournaments both in Africa and on the world stage, while the senior team’s impressive displays on the road to South Africa 2010 suggest genuine strides have been made. The 2013 CAF Africa Cup of Nations confirmed the rise of the Burkinabés, who reached the final of the continental tournament.

The key players
Top scorer in Africa during qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Moumouni Dagano provides the side’s main attacking threat, while Jonathan Pitroipa, Alain Traoré and Charles Kabore have emerged as leaders in midfield thanks to the experience they have picked up in Europe.

Coach: Paul Put
Best performance in a FIFA competition: FIFA U-17 World Cup Trinidad and Tobago 2001 (Third place)
Former stars: Alassane Ouedraogo, Seydou Traore

Niger Details:
Qualification history
Niger made their first bid to reach a FIFA World Cup™ final tournament in 1966 but they are still waiting to clear the initial qualifying hurdle. The team’s best showing came in the lead-up to Spain 1982, when they dispatched both Somalia and Togo before losing out to future finals participants Algeria. They also missed out on a second-round berth by a solitary point ahead of USA 1994.

The current crop
Capable of pulling off shock results, the Mena have added a little consistency to their game, participating in every CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign since 2000. Recent performances have suggested that progress continues, and the side can only benefit as more and more players are recruited by clubs overseas.

The key players
Forward Moussa Maazou is one of the first Nigerien players to have amassed experience in Europe. Most notably, the influential Mena spearhead has taken in spells at CSKA Moscow, Bordeaux and Monaco.

Coach: Gernot Rohr
Best performance in a FIFA competition: None
Former stars: Jacques Komlan, Hassane Adamou, Moussa Kanfideni
