However, the islanders struggled in their next two attempts to reach football’s showpiece event and will be outsiders again this time.

The Faroes have suffered similar problems in their qualification attempt for UEFA EURO 2012. Having shipped too many goals, their best result was a respectable 1-1 draw at home to Northern Ireland.
