Liechtenstein Details:

Qualification history
With a population of approximately 36,000, Liechtenstein is one of the smallest nations which will be taking part in the qualification campaign for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ in Brazil.

The team enjoyed their best-ever campaign in the preliminary competition for Germany 2006, registering two wins (each against Luxembourg) and two draws (against Portugal and Slovakia) from 12 games. The 4-0 away victory in Luxembourg remains the country’s biggest-ever win at international level.

However, Liechtenstein were unable to record a single victory en route to South Africa 2010, managing just two points (draws against Finland and Azerbaijan) to finish bottom of a group which included perennial heavyweights Germany and Russia.

The current crop
Liechtenstein have been officially competing at international level since 1982. Though there have been precious few victories during that time, there have nonetheless been a number of highlights. Recent draws away to Estonia and Iceland (both 1-1), each of whom are placed higher in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, suggest there may be a surprise or two in store during qualifying for Brazil 2014.

Key players
Captain Mario Frick is the undisputed star of the Liechtenstein national team. The record goalscorer and caps holder is a fixture of the side, along with Peter Jehle and Martin Stocklasa.

Current coach: Hans-Peter Zaugg
Best performance in a FIFA competition: None

Latvia details:
Qualification history
Latvia first entered FIFA World Cup™ qualifying in 1992, and although the team representing the newly-independent nation failed to record a win, they announced their re-emergence on the international stage with commendable draws against Spain and Denmark. However, they were unable to make a significant impression in the qualifying competitions for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France and the 2002 finals in Korea/Japan.

The men from the Baltic managed four wins and three draws in qualifying for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany, but that was only enough for a disappointing fifth spot in their group. The campaign for places at South Africa 2010 was much more encouraging, as coach Aleksandrs Starkovs’ men remained in the hunt until the last round of matches, and ended up third in their section behind Switzerland and Greece.

The current crop
Progress in the Latvian game has been gradual but steady in recent years, with a place at UEFA EURO 2004 the highlight so far, although that remains Latvia’s sole appearance at a major tournament to date. The current team rates as hard to beat, and could be good for an upset or two in the future.

The key players
Following the retirement of Vitalijs Astafjevs, captain for many years and the nation’s most-capped player, the team is now spearheaded by all-time top scorer Maris Verpakovskis and skipper Kaspars Gorkss.

Coach: Aleksandrs Starkovs
Best performance in a FIFA competition: None
Former stars: Vitalijs Astafjevs, Aleksandrs Kolinko, Mihails Zemlinskis
